Get on a road bike in Edinburgh, and no matter which direction you leave the urban bustle of the city, it's not going to be long before you're cycling along some fantastic rural routes. From the flat coastline of East Lothian, to the hills of Midlothian and the Scottish Borders. Choose from 5 of our tried and tested routes, selected for their varied spectacular terrain and level of effort required to cycle them. We are confident there is something here that will provide any road cyclist with a day in the saddle to remember, and hopefully a bit of a workout too.

Route 1 - East Lothian - Easy to Medium:

‘A pleasant ride along Scotland’s Golf Coast and through the East Lothian Countryside’

Distance: 45 kilometres (28 miles) Elevation gain: approx 250 metres (820 feet)
Lowest Point: 3 metres (10 feet) Highest Point: 140 metres (410 feet)
Time (incl. return transport from Edinburgh): 4 to 5 hours
Suitability: Competent road cyclists with a moderate level of fitness (16 years minimum age)
Terrain: Tarmac country roads with occasional short climbs of 5% to 10% incline.
Highlights: North Berwick, Firth of Forth, Gullane, Dirleton Castle

1 person BYOB (own bike) = £65* 2 to 8 persons BYOB (own bike) = £45pp

Route 2 - East Lothian – Medium

‘An eclectic mix of rewarding climbs in the foothills of the Lammermuirs, with the flat of the East Lothian coastline’

Distance: 62 kilometres (38 miles) Elevation gain: approx 500 metres (1640 feet)
Lowest Point: 5 metres (16 feet) Highest Point: 210 metres (630 feet)
Time (incl. return transport from Edinburgh): 4.5 to 5.5 hours
Suitability: Competent road cyclists with a moderate level of fitness (16 years minimum age)
Terrain: country roads with some moderate climbs of between 5% to 10%, and one short 14% incline.
Highlights: Lammermuir Hills, Views across East Lothian, Tantallon castle, Dirleton Castle, North Berwick, Gullane, Haddington, Gifford

Route 3 - Midlothian and Scottish Borders - Medium

‘This is a popular route with roadies and touring cyclists who pursue the challenge of a long climb into the Moorfoot Hills, with the reward of spectacular views of Edinburgh and the Lothians. Quiet country roads, sleepy farmsteads and sheep a plenty, take you well away from the bustle of the city’

Distance: 57 kilometres (35 miles) Elevation gain: approx 700 meters (2300 feet)
Lowest Point: 110 metres (360 feet) Highest Point: 410 metres (1350 feet)
Time (incl. return transport from Edinburgh): 4.5 to 5.5 hours
Suitability: Competent road cyclists with a moderate level of fitness (16 years minimum age)
Terrain: Tarmac country roads with prolonged ascents and long descents of 5% to 8%, and several short climbs in excess of a 10% incline.
Highlights: Moorfoot Hills, Crichton Castle, Borthwick Castle, Views of Edinburgh and Lothians, Sheep, sheep and more sheep.

What’s included in the price:

Guided and self guided tours include bike rental and transport to and from Edinburgh accommodation, Also included in the price is a helmet, lock, one pannier bag and lights.

- Wear suitable clothing and please bring a rain jacket. We do carry a limited stock of rain jackets and gloves.
- Please let us know if you have a preferred type of pedal you wish to use when cycling, and we will happily fit them onto your bike. We have a small selection of Shimano road and mountain bike SPD pedals, and Crank Brothers 'Egg Beater' pedals. We will also fit customers own pedals.
- It is advisable to bring along water and snacks for consumption during your ride. Although, a refreshment stop can be made on most of our tours.
