Sky to Sea Bike Tour - Water of Leith

You don’t have to travel far from Edinburgh to experience a typical Scottish rural landscape. Our Sky to Sea bike tour starts to the South of Edinburgh, high up at the foot of the picturesque Pentland Hills. Following the course of the city’s river, ‘The Water of Leith’, our route meanders across Edinburgh using subterranean ancient transport links, which once threaded their way across this industrious city, eventually arriving at what was once Scotland’s busiest port, The Port of Leith.

Route Description:

Our tour begins in the foothills of the Pentlands with panoramic views across the city of Edinburgh. Following the course of Edinburgh's main river, the Water of Leith, we cycle along the route of ancient transport links which once served the 90 or so mills positioned along the river banks. These routes conveniently pass through much of Edinburgh’s wilder green space, and a string of historic villages such as Colinton, Dean Village and Stockbridge, which once thrived on the production from the mills.

We eventually arrive at the Port of Leith, where the Water of Leith flows into the Firth of Forth estuary. Here we find 800 years of Leith's historic and industrial past, and what is now a proud and vibrant community, with an abundance of waterside bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as being a home for our Queen’s favourite ship the Royal Yacht Britannia. From here you will have the option to stay, have a meal and explore Leith, or cycle back to the city centre via the New Town.
