Auld Reekie Bicycle Tour (Easy/Medium - Edinburgh - Half Day)

Auld Reekie Bike Tour - Water of Leith
Auld Reekie Bike Tour - Water of Leith
Auld Reekie Bike Tour - Water of Leith

The name, ‘Auld Reekie’ not only refers to Edinburgh’s historic problem with a certain bad odour which was created by bad sanitation. But also, the noxious smog that hung over the city created by household coal fires and the beginning of Edinburgh’s steam industries. Our route steps back to Edinburgh’s industrious past. From transportation of fuel and raw materials via the Union canal and network of railways, and the production of goods in the watermills along the Water of Leith, to the export of goods around the world from Scotland’s busiest port, Leith.

Route Description:

Starting our tour in Harrison Park, we cycle west along the towpath of the Union Canal. Then following the course of Edinburgh’s main river, the Water of Leith, we cycle through a string of historic villages such as Dean Village and Stockbridge, which once thrived on the production from the water mills which harnessed the power of the water from the river to drive machinery. We may even be lucky enough see some river wildlife including Herons, Kingfishers and Swans, and mammals such as Otters, Foxes, Roe deer and squirrels.

Joining a subterranean network of disused railway paths, we arrive at the ancient Port of Leith, which was once Scotland’s busiest port. Here we learn about Leith’s importance in Scotland’s trade with the rest of the world, before finishing our tour at the New Town, now a UNESCO world heritage site, with its wide streets and grand Georgian architecture.
